I’m Her
"If you know [from] whence you came, there is really no limit to where you can go." - James Baldwin
When I reflect on the question, “What represents me as a Black woman?” I am instantly drawn to the Black women who have shaped me—the ones I have known, the ones who came before me, and even those I have never met but whose presence I feel deeply. Their strength, beauty, and resilience flow through me, and I honor them by telling their stories—authentically, honestly, and unapologetically—through my art.
There is no coincidence in the beauty of Black women. There is no coincidence in the beauty of diversity itself. Every face I touch, every canvas I create, is an extension of the people, cultures, and histories that have inspired me. My artistry is more than makeup—it is storytelling, a tribute to the essence of every model, every talent, every subject I encounter. My gift allows me to weave my essence into the finished product, ensuring that every piece I create holds a soul, a message, and a purpose.
I am a Black artist, and so everything I contribute becomes Black art. But that does not confine me—it empowers me. Who better to tell stories of passion, innovation, and resilience than me? I strive to break barriers, to challenge stereotypes, and to push boundaries. My most powerful tool is my makeup brush, and my battleground is the hearts and minds of my audience. I do not seek to merely enhance beauty; I aim to evoke emotion, spark conversation, and shift perspectives. Sometimes, that means creating work that empowers. Other times, it means making people sit with discomfort. But always, my art speaks.
At the same time, it is crucial to recognize that being a Black artist does not limit me to a single genre or narrative. Black artists must be seen and respected as whole artists, capable of shaping any story, any medium, any vision. For centuries, we have been innovators, creators, and pioneers. We are not a monolith, just as the subjects we adorn are not. Art is for everyone, and I stand as a testament to the limitless possibilities of Black artistry.
