My Egg
My piece of work is inspired by Zora Neale Hurston’s quote, “The present was an egg laid by the past that had the future inside its shell.” The back of my piece reflects my past, marked by the innocence of girlhood but also the challenges that we all endure during that phase of our life. The front of my piece reflects the ways I am continuing to evolve because of my experiences. This includes a very strong stance that I stand with other Black women as a Decolonial Black Feminist. Throughout my piece, Cowrie shells are embedded, symbolizing wealth, womanhood, fertility, and protection that have been planted and prayed over me by my ancestors and elders and as something I carry forward planting and praying over my daughter and her future. Finally, my piece features a white rose, magnolia, and sunflower as the crown, symbolizing femininity, joy, and love. Collectively, my Black womanhood is “my egg” laid by my past and holding my future.
