Edna A. McIver
The Survivor (2000)
This piece was inspired by the artist's reading of a book by the same name written by Harriet Jacobs in 1861 about her life. As a girl, Harriet hid in her grandmother's attic for 7 years to escape the tyranny of her enslaver. This story moved the artist to capture the life of black girls vulnerable to violence, tied to the past and their roots, always striving for safety and freedom. The tree in this piece is from the McIver family land in South Caroline whose roots struck the artist with their twists and entanglements, further telling the story of our lives and connections.
